Hear Us Out: Kinship Caregivers in MTV’s “Teen Moms 2”

Welcome to "Hear Us Out"– St. Catherine’s Center for Children’s think-tank podcast designed to spark and frame an ongoing conversation around the beauty, hardships, rewards, and untold stories of social service workers. This first installment “Let’s Care About Kinship Care” covers topics around the #KinshipCare relationship of grandparents, aunts and uncles, adult siblings or cousins (sometimes a close family friend) raising a relative’s child. Series: Let’s Care About Kinship Care S1:E1 – Like a Virtual Family S1:E2 – Kinship Caregivers in MTV’s “Teen Moms 2” S1:S3 – Why Isn’t Kinship Care Talked About? Kinship Care is not a new concept but it is a relatively new social services resource. Unlike #FosterCare or other child protective services where caregivers have months or even years of planning, preparation and training, kinship caregivers are often appointed under duress or emergency family circumstances. It is common for kinship caregivers to face unique barriers specific to their family circumstances that can hinder access to and eligibility for support. Many kinship caregivers are unaware that they are in a kinship care relationship and there are resources are available. If you are raising a grandchild, niece or nephew, younger sister or bother, you are a kinship caregiver.
